Time to drop the red lines

Dear Prime Minister,  
Dear Foreign Secretary,

As you step into your new roles of highest responsibility, I request that you urgently indicate this Government’s new approach to the EU and scrap the self-imposed and self-defeating red lines of the previous administration.  I am deeply frustrated with the approach the successive governments have taken on this, and the evidence shows the UK is not thriving in the decade since Brexit.

Our challenges are shared across borders – economic insecurity, rise in authoritarianism globally, and the climate crisis we are living through. It is time to show bold vision and accept that collaboration is our only choice. I call on you to:

*   Announce the end of the red lines policy
*   Begin urgent conversations with Europe about our shared interests
*   Reject the divisive politics of Brexit - face up to the growing far-right threat in the UK and address it with honesty and decisive action.

If this Government is to succeed where the previous Labour cabinet failed, it needs to own the principles of solidarity, collaboration and offer a practical vision for improving our lives. To this end, a new vision for our relationship with the EU remains a key pillar.

I hope you grasp this opportunity.
