Tell your MP: act now on Islamophobia

The racist Islamophobic riots that took place across the UK in August 2024, targeting mosques, asylum centres and racialised people on the streets, are one in a series of events demonstrating the urgent need for the government to confront Islamophobia. For a number of years, Muslims have been the [number one target](https://mcb.org.uk/mcb-responds-to-shocking-hate-crime-statistics/) of reported religious hate crimes in the UK; with many incidents going unreported.

Anti-Muslim racism disproportionately impacts individuals, groups and communities visibly identifiable as Muslims, such as women who wear the hijab, the headscarf, or other clothing that identifies them as Muslim. Gendered Islamophobia is the intersection of anti-Muslim racism, misogyny, sexism and gender based discrimination and it requires specific attention.

**We urge you to call on the government to take action against Islamophobia, giving the same attention to Islamophobia as it does to antisemitism and other forms of racism.** To begin with, the government must:

1.  Officially adopt the All-Party Parliamentary Group’s definition of Islamophobia. This defines Islamophobia as being “rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” 
2.  Recognise gendered Islamophobia as a form of violence against women and girls.
3.  Implement a muslim-community led national action plan to tackle Islamophobia, engaging with the Muslim Council of Britain - the largest representative body of Muslims in the UK.
