Against the migration white paper

I am writing to you as your constituent regarding the recently released White Paper on migration and the UK Government’s immigration rules reform. I am deeply frustrated with the approach the Government is taking on this. The rhetoric was shameful. But the direct impact these changes will have on the lives of our friends, neighbours and loved ones is also shocking and unacceptable.

We are not and never will be an “island of strangers” .We are an island of neighbours, of friends, of colleagues working every day to build a decent and welcoming society. It is not migrants, but tax avoiding corporations that are impoverishing our public services.

As my MP I am asking you to speak out against these proposals, including:

*   Arbitrary and unfair salary thresholds and language tests
*   A punitive doubling of the continuous residency requirement for settlement and citizenship 
*   Crippling increases in fees - a form of regressive taxation - for our immigrant workforce.

This is not a government with a vision and ambition to build a thriving society, but a government waving a white flag in resignation to the agenda of the far right. I ask that in Parliament you take a stand for migrants' rights and make the positive case for migration.
